I need help on adapting my home for my disability

Thanks to the ever rising life expectancy age, people are enjoying life for longer. As a result, increasingly more elderly people are finding it difficult to stay independent in their home. Alongside that, most people in life will experience some form of disability which can occur naturally, from old age, health issues or an accident.

What is the first step to adapting my home?

The initial stage is to fully understand your disabilities so that your needs can be reviewed and evaluated this will help plan for now and potential future changes. Everyone is completely different and your local occupational therapist can be consulted to discuss this is more detail.

What changes need to be made to my home for my disability needs?

Depending on your needs, the possible changes to your home can be wide ranging from ensuring your front entrance is wide enough to fit a wheelchair or scooter, installing equipment such as bath lifts and stairlifts, adding hand rails in relevant places, making hallways and corridors wider, placing visual or hearing aids around the home, to motion sensors in case of a fall and emergency needs.

I need a stairlift…

We have been in the stairlift industry for many years and have expert knowledge of makes, models, sizes, fitting, engineering and servicing. Whether you need a curved, straight, want a brand new one or value for money reconditioned, need heavy duty, outdoor or bespoke, we can deal with all stairlift needs. You’re Invited To Our A Be A Friend Tea Party

Be A Friend Website Banner

Did you know that over five million older people are affected by loneliness and this is on the rise?

We meet elderly and disabled people on a daily basis and understand how wide spread loneliness is and what an awful effect it can have on people’s lives. As a result we want to help Friends of the Elderly on their campaign to combat the issue. In partnership with StairliftRecycling.co.uk and Keighley Cougar’s Rugby Club we’re hosting a Be A Friend tea party on Wednesday 25 March from 2pm in our lovely new showroom.

Everyone is invited to come along and enjoy the entertainment, free refreshments, cakes and scones – please feel free to bring along your own baking to share with the group. Whether by yourself, with a friend or family member, the tea party is a chance to get out of the house, meet like-minded people, catch up with friends and chat the afternoon away at your leisure.  Fruit tea

We’re also looking for volunteers to Be A Friend for the afternoon and to help out with the event. Contact 0808 178 8487 or email headoffice@a1stairlifts.co.uk for more information.

10% of any sales made on the day will go to Friends of the Elderly charity.

Our showroom is based on 56 South Street, Keighley, West Yorkshire, BD21 1DD.

Explore your Freedom – Combatting Loneliness

We have recently started an  Explore Your Freedom advertising campaign in the Yorkshire Post’s weekend magazine. The reason being is that we’re passionate about encouraging and helping the elderly and disabled to enjoy their surroundings and live as full a life as possible.

YP advert - explore our freedom

A report was recently released by Friends of the Elderly looking at the landscape for loneliness amongst older people, in the next 5, 10 and 15 years (see full report here).    The key facts they found were:

  • Over five million older people in the UK are affected by loneliness, with more than a million saying they often feel lonely.
  • Being older is a crucial predictor of loneliness – demographic change alone will drive up the number of lonely older people in the UK by 40 per cent in the next 15 years.
  • There is a strong connection between low contact with family members and loneliness – contact with children is especially important.
  • There is a strong link between having low levels of income and being lonely – older people in poverty suffer lower frequency of social contacts.
  • Technology has the potential to make a positive impact on loneliness, but by 2030 10 per cent of older people will still not have a mobile phone or use the internet.

Friends of the Elderly are encouraging everyone to Be a Friend as everyday interactions have been proven to combat loneliness. We’re fully supportive of this campaign and that’s also a reason for our advertising campaign, because we want the less abled to be able to explore their freedom. We have a wide range of mobility products to support various needs. We specialise in reconditioned stairlifts which offer value for money for those that can’t afford or don’t need a brand new one.
